2018-12-11

Nominated in Le Parisien’s Les Étoiles du Parisien end-of-year ceremony

After an incredible year, marked by a series of prestigious events, Canadian Comedy Superstar Sugar Sammy returns to Ottawa to perform

Friday & Saturday, September 13 & 14 at the Canadian Museum of History Theatre at 7:45 pm. Tickets ($39.99 - 49.99 + taxes & service charges) are on sale now at www.sugarsammy.com!

In addition to his success in Canada, Sugar Sammy’s star power continues to grow exponentially in France. He has been nominated in the Humour category in the Parisien magazine’s countdown of 2018’s hottest performing arts and television stars in their annual Les Étoiles du Parisien show, which will be chosen on December 17. The gala will be televised for the first time, on December 21 on the C8 network. And, last week, on the TV5 network, Michel Drucker, considered to be the Johnny Carson of France, hosted Le grand show de l’humour from the Zenith theatre, presenting the Top 50 favourite comedians of all time, chosen in a national survey, and including Sugar Sammy! He is a judge on La France a un Incroyable Talent (the French version of America’s Got Talent), one of France’s most popular TV shows, with ratings averaging 3.5 million viewers an episode.

The challenges keep coming and Sugar Sammy forges forward. Ultimately, his comedy has changed the landscape of our cultural reality by confronting language and social issues and exploring the great cultural divide. He can hit on cultural, social and political themes with such charm and finesse that it allows him to push the envelope a little farther than most, especially in his famous improv moments, which allow him to interact with audiences at every one of his shows, both onstage and after the shows. Sugar Sammy consistently has one of the most colourful audiences in Canada!

His bilingual show, You’re Gonna Rire combined with its all-French version En français svp!, presented in his home town of Montreal and across the province, had a total of 421 sold-out performances and sold 372,000 tickets, making him the best-selling artist with a first one-man show in the history of Quebec. Then, in 2016, Sugar Sammy performed the hit bilingual show one last time in front of a record-breaking crowd of over 115,000 outdoors at the Montreal International Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. Last year he toured Canada, hosting the Just For Laughs Comedy Tour, which visited 12 cities across the country, including Ottawa.

With all this Canadian success, he promptly decamped to Paris and started over from scratch to see how far he could push French audiences. Pretty far, it turns out! After selling over 45,000 tickets in France, Belgium & Switzerland, his residency at the Alhambra theatre continues through December.

This November he was profiled on CTV’s national newsmagazine W5, which visited with him in both Montreal and Paris. You can see the show here.

The past year has also seen him featured in the New York Times, the world’s most prestigious publication, as well as on the front page of its international edition; perform in Malaysia and Singapore; launch two comedy specials and record a live show for Comedy Central Asia.

Next on the agenda: A return to Toronto and Ottawa and a brief tour of the U.S.: No one escapes his razor sharp wit!
