SUGAR SAMMY SETS NEW RECORD AS HE BIDS ADIEU TO HIT BILINGUAL SHOW YOU'RE GONNA RIRE

2016-07-26

Sugar Sammy is the comedian who's sold the most tickets to a debut one-man show in Quebec history.

This Thursday, July 28, he presents final performance of You're Gonne Rire at Montreal's Place des Festivals.

Just over four years after it first hit the stage on February 23, 2012, Montreal comedian Sugar Sammy’s hit bilingual show You’re Gonna rire / En français svp has sold 371,509 tickets, setting a new record. Throughout its 420-performance tour, it’s generated over $17.4 million in box office revenues.* “I’d like to thank everyone who made this success possible: the comedians and DJs who warmed up the audiences, the production team, evenko, the venue staff, the marketing and publicity teams, and the management and PR teams. I’d also like to thank the journalists who did a superb job of promoting the show, inspiring audiences give their time and a portion of their pay cheques to come and see the show.”

Sugar Sammy will mark the end of his record-breaking comedy tour with a very special event: This Thursday, July 28 at 9PM, Sugar Sammy will perform You’re Gonna rire one last time at a huge outdoor show at Place des festivals, presented by both Just For Laughs and Juste pour rire, where he will take to the stage in front of thousands of English- and French-speaking fans. The night will begin with a set by DJ Yo-C and opening acts Stéphane Poirer and Massimo, and then conclude with a Melting Pot Block Party on the esplanade of Place des Arts, featuring an open air bar and musical performances by popular band, The Brooks, as well as DJ Yo-C, in an after party that will have people dancing in the streets till the wee hours of the morning. Tickets for the after party are available at www.hahaha.com.

As the first bilingual comedy show in Canadian history, the groundbreaking You’re Gonna rire led to hundreds of media stories, and hundreds of hours of public discussion and debate. Ultimately, it changed the landscape of Quebec’s cultural reality by confronting language issues like never before in an entertaining exploration of the cultural divide and language debate still omnipresent in Quebec today.

Sugar Sammy’s July 28 marquee performance is just the most recent in a long line of headline-grabbing successes for the comedian: his extensive tour dates have won him the ranking of one of the 30th highest-grossing touring comedians in North America, according to Pollstar Magazine (March 2013); in April 2014, Billboard Magazine named him the top-selling Canadian artist for the 12 previous months; in May 2013, he became the first non-francophone comedian to win the coveted Olivier de l’année at Quebec’s 2013 Olivier Awards ceremony to honour comedians who perform in French; thanks to the popular vote, he won the same award for the second consecutive time the following year; February 2014 marked the debut of Sugar Sammy and French-speaking comedian Simon-Olivier Fecteau's TV show on Quebec’s French V network – Ces gars-là, a buddy comedy à la Wedding Crashers and Swingers, written by and starring the two comedians and directed by Simon-Olivier Fecteau; in 2016, Sugar Sammy has created a new show especially for France and in the fall, he’ll head overseas to officially bring it to French crowds, after testing the show in April of this year at the legendary Point Virgule club in Paris, where he sold out every performance.

On Thursday, July 28, Sugar Sammy will be on home turf to perform You’re Gonna Rire for the very last time, at a free outdoor show at la Place des festivals at 9PM at the Just For Laughs / Juste pour rire festival, in front of thousands of English- and French-speaking Montrealers.
